Branson Shooting for the Moon on Commercial Space Travel
Speaking earlier today on the CBS This Morning, Branson elucidated Virgin’s galactic plans for the coming years, remarking that he hopes to put “hundreds of thousands of people into space within the next twenty years…which will provide the resources for other things”.
The self-confessed adventurer was reticent about the profitability of the program, answering coyly that it would “pay the bills at the end of the year”. He says that the planned two-hour flights are more a question of bringing the excitement of space to ordinary people: “There are only 500 people who have ever been into space. They are the privileged astronauts … we just want to enable people to become astronauts and experience it”.
Despite his cosmic aspirations, Branson insists that terrestrial flights are far from perfect: “I think the quality of US carriers is pretty abysmal”. He predicts that passenger flights will achieve the distance from the US to Australia in less than two hours in the near future.
